Why Socialism Violates the Ten Commandments

The Ten Commandments are not merely private religious rules. They reveal God’s moral order for individuals, families, communities, and nations.

Although socialism encompasses various political and economic expressions, its radical and authoritarian forms often conflict with biblical principles concerning divine authority, personal responsibility, family integrity, private property, and human freedom.

The following are ten ways socialist ideology violate the moral principles embedded in the Ten Commandments.

  1. You Shall Have No Other Gods Before Me (Exodus 20:3)

The First Commandment establishes that God alone deserves our ultimate allegiance.

Socialism violates this principle when it conditions people to look to the state as their ultimate provider, protector, and source of security.

While civic government has legitimate responsibilities, including protecting the vulnerable and administering justice, it must never replace God as humanity’s ultimate source of trust.

When political systems cultivate total dependence upon centralized authority for livelihood, housing, healthcare, education, and survival, the state can assume a quasi-divine role.

The biblical concern is not legitimate government assistance but political authority becoming a functional substitute for God.

  1. You Shall Not Make for Yourself a Carved Image (Exodus 20:4–6)

The Second Commandment prohibits idolatry and the worship of created things.

Authoritarian communist regimes have repeatedly elevated political leaders and state ideology to positions resembling religious worship.

In North Korea, the ruling Kim dynasty has cultivated an extraordinary personality cult. In Communist China, the government restricts religious activities deemed incompatible with Communist Party authority.

These examples demonstrate the danger of political ideology becoming a form of civil religion.

No government, political leader, or ideology should receive the worship and ultimate allegiance reserved for God.

  1. You Shall Not Take the Name of the Lord Your God in Vain (Exodus 20:7)

This commandment involves more than avoiding the use of profanity with God’s name . It includes honoring God’s name through our speech, conduct, worship, and public witness.

Authoritarian socialism conflicts with this principle when it relegates Christianity to a subservient position under the state.

When governments determine what churches may preach, whom they may appoint, or whether believers may publicly confess Christ, they attempt to reduce divine authority to political permission.

Although such suppression is not identical to the commandment’s primary prohibition, it reflects disregard for the honor due God.

  1. Remember the Sabbath Day, to Keep It Holy (Exodus 20:8–11)

The Sabbath reminds humanity that ultimate rest comes from God, not merely from the cessation of labor.

There is nothing inherently wrong with government holidays, unions, labor protections, or reasonable working conditions.

However, political systems violate the underlying principle when they subordinate worship, religious observance, and spiritual freedom to the demands of the state.

When civic government prevents citizens from honoring God according to conscience, it exceeds its legitimate jurisdiction.

The state can regulate working conditions, but it cannot provide the soul’s ultimate rest.

  1. Honor Your Father and Your Mother (Exodus 20:12)

The Fifth Commandment establishes the family as a foundational institution of society.

One danger of an expansive ideological state is when government institutions impose ideological curricula which dishonor parental convictions or encourage minors to conceal significant decisions concerning gender identity, medical treatment, or reproductive health from their parents.

Although legitimate child protection must be acknowledged, the government should not routinely undermine responsible parental authority.

Biblically, parents are accountable before God for raising their children (Deuteronomy 6:6–7; Ephesians 6:4).

The state should support families rather than replace them.

  1. You Shall Not Murder (Exodus 20:13)

The Sixth Commandment is rooted in the sanctity of human life because every person bears God’s image (Genesis 9:6).

Historically, authoritarian communist regimes have committed grave violations of human life through political purges, killing protestors, forced abortions to comply with population control, forced labor, executions, and state-sponsored repression.

Many far left socialist leaders violate the spirit of this commandment when they knowingly tolerate persistent violent criminality in the name of equity which causes a rise in homicides and fails to  protect citizens.

Although these failures are not exclusive to socialism, any ideology placing collective objectives or political expediency above human life contradicts biblical justice.

  1. You Shall Not Commit Adultery (Exodus 20:14)

The Seventh Commandment protects marriage and the covenantal integrity of the family.

Certain redistributive policies undermine this principle when they financially penalize marriage.

Beginning with welfare programs associated with the Great Society era, some assistance structures created marriage penalties when couples lost benefits after combining household incomes.

Consequently, unmarried couples could sometimes receive greater financial assistance than married couples with comparable resources.

Although such socialistic policies do not constitute adultery, they can discourage marriage and weaken family stability.

Government policy should strengthen covenantal marriage rather than financially disadvantage it.

  1. You Shall Not Steal (Exodus 20:15)

The Eighth Commandment establishes the moral legitimacy of personal property and prohibits unjust appropriation.

Certain socialist systems undermine this principle when they subordinate private property and individual labor to extensive collective control.

Confiscatory progressive taxation , inheritance tax, disregard for property rights, and systems rewarding persistent unwillingness to work raise serious questions of justice.

Jesus acknowledged legitimate taxation (Matthew 22:21) however policies that unjustly appropriate property or undermine productive stewardship can violate this commandment.

  1. You Shall Not Bear False Witness Against Your Neighbor (Exodus 20:16)

Historically, authoritarian Marxist socialist regimes have exercised extensive control over media, education, and public discourse to suppress dissent, manipulate public opinion, and distort historical truth.

Although deception is not exclusive to socialist governments, any political system suppressing truthful criticism to preserve its authority violates this commandment.

  1. You Shall Not Covet (Exodus 20:17)

The Tenth Commandment prohibits the sinful desire to possess what belongs to another.

Marxist socialist ideology can cultivate covetousness when it encourages resentment and perpetual antagonism between economic classes and certain ethnic groups

This often results in (heavily funded) orchestrated violent expressions of collective rage rather than taking steps toward reconciliation and civil solutions.

Biblical justice confronts genuine oppression while treating every person with dignity, irrespective of ethnicity or social status (Galatians 3:28; James 2:1–9).

We must pursue justice without allowing covetousness to drive social change.

Conclusion

The Ten Commandments reveal a moral vision fundamentally opposed to political systems that make the state supreme, undermine families, devalue human life, disregard property rights, suppress truth, or cultivate covetousness.

Our calling is not merely to resist socialism but to demonstrate a biblical alternative grounded in Christ’s lordship, human dignity, responsible stewardship, strong families, productive labor, impartial justice, and sacrificial generosity.

The state must remain the servant of justice, never the substitute for God.
