The Bible teaches us in Exodus 20:5-6 that God promises either generational blessings or curses depending on how we decide to live our lives.

Galatians 3:13 is a key passage that all Christians need to understand in order to bring the blessings of God upon their family line for generations to come.

Text: Galatians 3:13-14
Christ redeemed us from the curse of the law by becoming a curse for us, for it is written: “Cursed is everyone who is hung on a tree.” He redeemed us in order that the blessing given to Abraham might come to the Gentiles through Christ Jesus, so that by faith we might receive the promise of the Spirit.

I. Christ redeemed us from the curse of the law (Galatians 3:13)

1. Christ paid the price by becoming a curse to purchase us back from the curse of breaking the laws of God (2 Corinthians 5:21–Jesus became sin for us).

2. Deuteronomy 28:15-24 gives an example of some of the curses that will come upon a family line.

3. In many ways all of our families have been under one curse or another because of Romans 3:23.

4. The curse of the law is different from the curse of Adam which is not fully taken away until Jesus returns bodily the second time.

II. That the blessings of Abraham might come upon us (Galatians 3:14)

1. The blessing of Abraham is eternal life, property, dominion, prosperity, honor (“I will make your name great”), and a multitude of children who follow the Lord.

2. The blessing was so great that he could not be cursed by an outsider (Genesis 12:3). An outsider cannot curse us as Christians but we can curse ourselves with disobedience!

3. God promised Abraham that prominent leaders would come from him and Sarah (Genesis 17:6, 16).

4. Galatians 3:14 also promises that the Spirit would be upon our generations by faith–“by faith” means it’s not automatic!

5. God chose Abraham because he would teach his children to keep the ways of the Lord.

III. How to Break the Generational Curse

1. Review how your parents resolved conflicts, communicated, showed affection, handled stress, used their time, related to other family members and friends, suffered with sickness, mental illness, fears and phobias, procrastination, rebellion, drugs, false religions, etc.

2. After reflection, write down areas of your life, marriage, and family in which you carry over the wrong habit patterns of your parents or still suffer the effects of their sins and curses.

3. Confess and repent of these patterns (with your spouse if married) and break the curse over your family line in the name of Jesus.

4. Reveal to your children what you have been doing wrong and ask their forgiveness, asking them not to repeat the same patterns.

5. Establish a regular family altar. Husbands need to lead in family prayer and the word, not just their wives.

6. Understand that in most cases the model “house of God” will not be fully established in your house but in your children’s.
a. Rarely do first-generation parents get it right in regards to having a house of the Lord.
b. 1 Chronicles 28:2-3, 6 shows that David could not build God a house because he was a man of war and much bloodshed, and that his son Solomon would be the one to build God a house and a resting place. (Being a man of war and bloodshed has to do with discovering and rooting out all your enemies before you are fully established. Often the first generation spends years discovering sins and harmful habit patterns before they get it right. Thus at times a model house of God isn’t built until the second or third generation.)
