10 Attributes of Those Whose God is Their Inheritance 

According to the Old Testament, the Levites did not have any land apportioned to them because the Lord was their inheritance (Numbers 18:19-20). This had nothing to do with taking a vow of poverty. It had to do with the fact that the other tribes were to support them and that the privilege of being a priest and approaching God was more significant than any worldly inheritance by comparison.

In the New Testament, all true believers are called to the priesthood (1 Peter 2:8-9). This implies that we should understand that the riches of knowing and accessing God should be our greatest joy and priority.

Unfortunately, many Christians often have a greater desire for earthly possessions than knowing and being with the Lord. 

The following are ten attributes of those in whom God is their inheritance. 

1. They are not in competition with others. 

Those whose greatest possession is delighting in God are not competing with other people because they have already attained and are experiencing that which satisfies their greatest longing. They have already found their greatest riches in Christ and have nothing to prove to others (2 Corinthians 10:12).

2. They are not impressed with money, power, and prestige.

Once a person has truly encountered Jesus, everything else is boring and a disappointment in comparison.  

3. Their longing is to know God more than accomplishing things for God. 

Like Moses, the great yearning of their heart is for God to reveal His ways and to show them His glory (Exodus 33:13-18 ). Thus, their longing for experiential fellowship with God and His word is much greater than their desire to do things for God (although to love God is to obey His assignment John 21:15-17).

4. Their greatest fear is to be out of fellowship with God.

Like David in Psalm 51:11-13, whose greatest fear was for God to cast him away from His presence, God-seekers don’t want to go anywhere or do anything without being in His presence (Exodus 33:15-16)

5. They constantly long to spend time with God.

Since lovers love to be alone, perhaps the greatest sign that God is their inheritance is prioritizing their devotional life above all else (Psalm 42:1-2).

6. They say no to many good opportunities.

Since God lovers don’t need anything else to satisfy them, they do not chase after notoriety or large platforms. They can easily say no to opportunities that God is not leading them to pursue (1 John 2:15-17). 

7. They are not always running around with many activities.

I have noticed that those with a deep relationship with God are careful not to fill up their calendar with endless activities. This is because they desire much discretionary time to be contemplative and pour over His Word (Luke 10:38-42).

8. Their interest is knowing God’s ways more than getting a word from God.

Those who know God and His ways do not depend upon getting prophetic words from others to discern God’s will. They are like Moses, who knew God’s ways while everyone else only knew God through observing His actions (Psalm 103:7). Those that are continually running around desiring prophetic words demonstrate that they lack a deep knowledge of God. Those whose God is their inheritance exert the bulk of their time and energy on seeking God’s face to know His paths (Psalm 25:4).

9. Their allegiance is to God’s Kingdom more than to any earthly nation

Those people who have God as their inheritance exhibit greater allegiance to God’s will and Kingdom than their earthly nation. While it is not against scripture to be a patriot who loves our nation, we need to be willing to speak truth to our country and our political party when they contradict the law of God and go against advancing His Kingdom.

10. Nothing in this world can satisfy them.

Those who have experienced God as their inheritance are so fascinated with Him that everything else bores them in comparison. Consequently, they live a simple life of contentment in Him and do not need to fill their life up with endless entertainment and worldly pursuits (Phil. 4:11-13).
