Oftentimes we do not think that other people can fully relate to us; we say that “they are not in our shoes” so that they cannot judge us or correct us. The word of God teaches us that Jesus was able to fully deliver and save us because He Himself suffered in His humanity like we suffer (Hebrews 2:14-18). It was out of this knowledge that He was able to make us righteous. The following passage taken from Isaiah 53 will be examined in the light of this concept.

Text: Isaiah 53:4-5, 11
Surely He has borne our griefs
And carried our sorrows;
Yet we esteemed Him stricken,
Smitten by God, and afflicted.
But He was wounded for our transgressions,
He was bruised for our iniquities;
The chastisement for our peace was upon Him,
And by His stripes we are healed….
Yet it pleased the LORD to bruise Him;
He has put Him to grief.
When You make His soul an offering for sin,
He shall see His seed, He shall prolong His days,
And the pleasure of the LORD shall prosper in His hand.
He shall see the labor of His soul, and be satisfied.
By His knowledge My righteous Servant shall justify many,For He shall bear their iniquities.

Isaiah 53:4-5:
• Jesus bore our griefs and carried our sorrows
• Every painful situation we could possibly go through in life He carried upon Himself. It is with His pain and suffering that we are healed.
• His sufferings included:

1. Having a questionable birth with His mother accused of adultery (Matthew 1:18-24).
2. Being born in a filthy manger with animals (Luke 2:7).
3. Coming from a family with descendants that included a prostitute , adulterers, liars, and murderers (Matthew 1:1-17).
4. Living in a family that had to constantly move to preserve its safety (Matthew 2:13-23).
5. Being brought up with brothers who did not affirm or believe His calling (John 7:1-8).
6. Having an awareness of life no one else could fully understand or relate to.
7. Being accused of being a drunkard, having demons, of being a blasphemer of God; also being a victim of mob violence (Matthew 11:19, 12:24, 26:65; Luke 4:28-30).
8. Being homeless during His ministry (Matthew 8:20).
9. Being part of an ethnic people in the minority that were oppressed by the majority culture and political system.
10. Having a close friend who betrayed Him (Matthew 26:14-16).
11. Being falsely accused, tried and imprisoned and murdered (Matthew 26:47, 27:1-66).
12. Having a Father with the power to deliver Him, who abandoned Him while watching His mother agonize in her helplessness (Matthew 27:46).
13. On the cross He carried the sins and sicknesses of His people.

Isaiah 53:11: He shall be satisfied out of His anguish, or the suffering of His soul. By His knowledge Jesus shall make His people righteous and bear their sins.

1. Satisfaction only came after He faced His pain head on and persevered in His purpose. (When we run from our pain we prolong its ill effects because we carry it for years, allowing it to get worse and worse with our age.)
2. This passage teaches that His knowledge came out of His suffering for us.
3. Jesus has true knowledge to save us from our sins and those things that are destroying us because He Himself suffered all temptations like us.
4. Read Hebrews 4:14-16.

Isaiah 53:10: He shall see His offspring and the will of the Lord shall prosper in His hand.

1. His suffering gave God the Father His children.
2. Either we come to God today through the sufferings of Christ or we ignore and insult Jesus by dismissing His suffering for us and rejecting His salvation.
3. The will of the Lord will prosper in His hand. This is the only way we will ever experience true prosperity of soul, heart, mind, and body.
