(This based on a teaching I have given in a bible study )
Text Philippians 2:12,13
Therefore, my beloved, as you have always obeyed, so now, not only as in my presence but much more in my absence, work out your own salvation with fear and trembling, 13 for it is God who works in you, both to will and to work for his good pleasure.
Business does not always mean productivity! I.E. You can practice golf all day and not get better if you never had the right technique to begin with! Business makes people feel important –like there is a purpose to their life, but if they do not work on their inner man of the heart and just fill up their day with activities, then they will not be ready in a time of crisis!
When crisis hits, then what you are on the inside will shine forth but if you have never taken time to develop your inner man, then the outside circumstances of life will be too much for you and crush you; I.E. Jesus was asleep in a small boat in the midst of a storm because His faith was so high He was able to be at complete rest when trouble hit.
Let’s Look At The Text
1-God is at work
-God is the only one that can accomplish inward transformation in our soul. We cannot change ourselves no matter how much we try to make New Year’s resolutions
-All transformation has to be initiated by God to be effective
-By transformation we mean being more and more like Jesus Christ in our heart and actions
-In order for us to grow spiritually we need to give God space or room to operate
-This means we need to give Him time alone with us on a daily basis
2- He Works in you
-True transformation comes in the heart
-This means we need to be quiet enough to understand what God is saying and doing inside our soul
-Even if we are filled with Christian activities of ministry we can miss God if we do not practice silence and solitude so we can know what God is working on the inside of us
-We need to allow Him to transform our inner being so that we are not merely performing our work with our natural abilities and talents but with the power and presence of God’s Spirit!
Some people can look like Spiritual giants on the outside because they are doing so much work for God but on the inside they may be spiritual midgets that are performing their work based on natural abilities and talent!
3-Both to will
-As we give God space to operate in our soul He turns our hearts so that our will desires His will!
-Our values systems and priorities begin to be transformed
-We become more like Christ, as we are no longer driven to succeed to impress others or to feel good about ourselves.
-He heals our hearts of past wounds and gives us the ability to view life through His eyes and heart
-We can walk away from temptation and say, “not my will but yours be done!”
-We begin to delight ourselves in the Lord and He gives us the desires of our heart!
4-and to work or perform
-The more transformed we are the more we can discern His will and the more we can perform our daily work in the power of His spirit
-As our heart and desires are purified by His fire and spirit – even what we desire to do sometimes gets dramatically altered! Maybe we choose a different career altogether!
-I.E. I never wanted to preach the gospel when I first came to Christ – I hated preachers because of bad experiences in the past. But the more I allowed Him to work on the inside of me the more I was compelled to preach the gospel. Even as Paul said, “the love of Christ compelled him.”
-So its not just hearing a prophetic word or getting a word in our soul – God literally fills our whole being with a desire to accomplish or perform a work for Him !
5-His Good Pleasure
–The more we allow God to have His way in our life the more pleasure and joy we bring His heart!
-We were born and we were created for His pleasure and not for our own pleasure;
-The object of our life more and more is going to be to live for His pleasure as we mature in Him
-Jesus shed His blood so that we can live as obedient children that delight in His will and give Pleasure to His heart!
-One of the greatest delights to my soul is to know that I can give God joy and pleasure by the life I lead even if I am still a sinner and even though He is still working inside of my heart and mind.
So in conclusion – We need to give God space to operate inside of our life to allow Him to bring inner transformation so that we can be like Jesus Christ.
